It had been a couple of years since I left Mango Street. My life changed completely, I had a career as a teacher. I also married a man who was an architect.
I looked back and thought “how is Mango Street doing.” I imagined it in my mind, poor and hopeless. A few weeks later, my husband and I decided to go to Mango Street. I had one goal in my mind, fixing Mango Street. I knew that was going to be a huge challenge because of the mayor. I had to come up with a plan to
convince him. The worst thing Mango Street had been schools and I was committed
to make a change in that priority.
My husband, an architect, had helped me with this new project. As an architect, he had
designed the school. When we arrived to Mango Street, memories came back. Seeing the poor hungry kids made me feel sad. At that same instant, everyone recognized the one and only Esperanza. Everybody was glad to see me again. After a while, I told everyone to gather up
because I had good news. Everyone ran towards my husband and me anxiously! As
everybody got there, I told them that their kids’ life was going to change.
Their clueless faces looked at us. “My husband and I will build a school for
Mango Street!” I said excitedly. The peoples’ faces turned to an excited and
glad one as they hugged and thanked us, “But wait, there’s also a minor
problem.” I said. “We will have to convince the mayor. Yes, I said “we” because
with everyone’s help, there will be a greater possibility for our plan to work”
I said. At the end of the day, my husband and I went to a hotel to spend the
night and come up with a plan to convince the mayor. I honestly didn’t wanted to
sleep until a had a plan. I was almost falling asleep when I came up with a
genius idea! My idea was to do a petition with all Mango Street and then take it
to the mayor so he could see everyone in Mango Street wanted a new school. The
next morning, I went to Mango Street with my husband and started asking for all
the signatures possible. Everyone was very anxious to sign the paper! After
everyone signed it, my husband and I went to visit the mayor. He immediately
recognized me too. My husband and I talked to him about our plan, but he didn’t
look very sure about it. I was really worried about what his decision was going
to be. He said he would think about it and to come visit him again in one week.
A week passed and we went to his office again. He didn’t look very convinced but he
finally accepted our plan. My husband and I were very happy and we drove back to
Mango Street to tell the neighborhood the good and exciting news! We told
everyone to gather together and we told them that the mayor accepted our plan of
making a new school on Mango Street! We immediately started our plan by calling
a construction company so they could build the school that my husband had
designed.
After months of hard work, the school was finally finished! Seeing the children’s excited
faces filled me with happiness. The day came were the school was finally opened
and the kids on Mango Street had a school in their neighborhood. I had to return
back to work and I had to leave Mango Street. I was happy I accomplished my goal
and left with my heart full of joy!
