House bill 5 is a law that is currently in the process of being passed by the state of Texas. This law will decide if they should take algebra 2 out of high school graduation requirements to add more classes to start preparing students for various jobs. House bill 5 will impact my future by taking algebra 2 out of courses because it will hurt me when I apply to college. Now that I know, I am going to take advantage of the opportunity to take algebra 2 because the career that I study in college requires it. In my opinion, I’m still undecided. There is 50 percent it's better for students to be prepared for the future and 50 percent it's not better.
When the Texas House of Representatives voted, it was a 145-2 vote in support of HB5. In regards to graduation requirements, HB5 relates a single foundation diploma and eliminates the minimum recommended and distinguished graduation plans that are currently in place.
In the future Algebra 2 will determine my future because what I want to study is a career that needs algebra 2. And if I didn't take it I would not be able to take that career. I think that the representatives are being unfair. Students need to make their own decision about their future, but I’m afraid we are too young for this one. I want to be a doctor someday and at least get an bachelor’s degree. It's required that I take algebra 2 to become a doctor.
Therefore in my opinion it's better that the high school graduation plan should not get easier. Aycock once said, " there are many children that are crowding to the system because they do not see relevance in their course. Those are students that should be prepared for a job." I don’t agree. Other students need to be shown the relevance in classes like me, and also would be way more interested if they knew it mattered for college.
As a result it's better that students make their final decision instead of some representatives decided. But school should teach them how to make these decisions.
