I never thought that I'd be position that I'm in today. I never thought in my entire life that I'd have the opportunity to see a college and visit a campus, let alone me even know about colleges and high school classes that'll prepare me for college. Just being in AVID has helped me a lot... experience new opportunities, learning to use my voices positively, and how to communicate effectively in the real world. It has prepared me for high school, and for the the great achievement that I will have in the future.
Going into AVID, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into and now I’ve realized that it has even had a major effect on not just me but my entire family. If I were to go to college, I’d be the second person in my entire family that actually will graduate high school and go somewhere in life, and not to drop out and have kids at the age of sixteen, like the majority of my family. AVID has helped me get onto the road to the future that I want, and not the path many of my family members went down.
This spring in AVID I had the opportunity to visit two college campuses. In April, we visited the University of Oklahoma. There are just so many people and the campus is enormous. I couldn’t imagine myself being in that college or taking classes with my career, but when we went to the Stephen F. Austin State University I immediately felt like it was a home away from home. It was not too big or too small. It was just right. Kind of like goldilocks, like our mentor said as she was talking to us about how wonderful SFA is. SFA was way more convincing than OU.
I really want to go to SFA and experience college. Just being there made me feel like I belonged there and that it was a place I can achieve my goals. This field trip has affected how I feel about college and SFA motivated me even more. Going there and seeing the people and the buildings, pushes me more to finish high school and not drop out. It made me realize how fast I have to make wise decisions and grow up.
SFA made me feel just right and I'm willing to keep my head in the books and stay on the right path for me to get where I need to go. I can visualize myself studying on campus and buying my very own scantron to take tests in college. I’m ready for it!
