Last Thursday, AVID had the chance to go on a very long field trip to Nacogdoches, Texas, to visit the Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) campus. We also visited the University of Oklahoma (OU) in Norman, Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago. The two universities were both unique in their very own ways and each have something that caught my eye.
Even though Oklahoma University has an absolutely beautiful campus, the tour did not really catch my attention. The tour at Stephen F. Austin was very fun and exciting. Although the campus was not as big as OU, it definitely caught my attention.
Unlike many universities, all of the buildings were within walking distance which was really convenient for the students who do not have any kind of transportation. Also, the recreation center had an outdoor pool and an indoor gym which was very interesting.
At Stephen F. Austin, we even had a scavenger hunt! Exploring the campus with a confusing map and a cup of Seven-Up was a really fun twist in our field trip. We visited loads of different buildings on the campus including the Recreation Center, The School of Education, and Lumberjack Landing, where the freshmen live while at college. We got lost at least five times which made the scavenger hunt even more exciting. We ended up with a pair of exhausted legs and all of the buildings on our list checked off.
Although SFA had a beautiful campus, I believe the Engineering College at Oklahoma University would make me a more successful graduate. At the Engineering College at OU, we built a ping-pong ball launcher. Trying to build it was very challenging and required a lot of thinking. Even though we ended with complete failure, it was a lot of fun to build!
However, one thing I did not like about the University of Oklahoma was that the classes were very big. At Stephen F. Austin (SFA), each class only had about twenty-five students. With a smaller class, each student gets more attention and assistance. I think this would be very helpful in the case that I don’t understand a lesson or miss something essential to know.
In conclusion, both universities are very interesting and have a very high success rate. However, I do not believe either of these universities would suit my way of learning. In my seventh grade year, AVID took me on a trip to the University of Texas at Austin. From the moment I set foot on the campus, I knew it would hold my future. I loved every single detail of the university from the tour around the campus to the lunch in the cafeteria. To this day, my mind is set on attending UT because it is like The University of Oklahoma and Stephen F. Austin all in one. Not to mention the beautiful campus.
Going to a university is a goal I am looking forward to accomplishing. Attending the University of Texas at Austin would be a dream come true. I’m going to make it happen.
